Monument Man The Life And Art Of Daniel Chester French

This book begins with the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in 1922, with all the dignitaries in the spotlight, and the quiet, reserved sculptor Daniel Chester French off to the sidelines. I found it upsetting that even prominent African Americans were segregated and forced to sit "a block away" from the monument....but it was a sign of those times. Ironic that Lincoln freed the slaves, but blacks were forbidden to be near the monument dedication of the man who freed them. The book did hold my interest as it detailed French's life and the many works of art he created throughout his lifetime.
